The type of brake system that utilizes air as the primary medium is known as a pneumatic brake system. In this system, compressed air is used to apply force to the brake components, which then create friction to slow down or stop the vehicle. Pneumatic brakes are commonly found in large vehicles such as buses and trucks because they can provide a significant amount of braking force with less physical effort compared to other systems.

The operation of pneumatic brakes is based on principles of air pressure; when the driver presses the brake pedal, it activates a compressor that fills the air lines with compressed air. This air travels to the brake cylinders, pushing pistons that engage the brakes at the wheels. The advantage of using air as a medium is that it can be easily generated, stored, and controlled, making it efficient for larger vehicles that require more substantial braking power.

Other types of brake systems operate using different principles. Hydraulic brake systems, for instance, use fluid to transmit force from the brake pedal to the braking mechanism, while electronic brake systems rely on electrical inputs and sensors to control brake actuation. Mechanical brake systems utilize physical components like levers and cables rather than fluid or air pressure.
